Health Benefits of a Cold Shower

We had record-breaking heat across the country last week. Many of us would have welcomed a cold shower. But are there any real health benefits from taking a cold shower?

A study published in PLOS One (a journal published by the Public Library of Science) found that the body responds to cold exposure. Individuals exposed to cold experienced increased heart rate, increased circulation, and a boost in adrenaline.

Individuals who took cold showers every day had fewer sick days. The shock of being exposed to cold water may increase white blood cell production. White blood cells fight off infections. However, responses to cold varied from person to person.

Many people swear by cold showers; they report signs of improved mental and physical health. An increase in endorphins and other hormones can enhance mood and energy levels.

During a cold shower, your body has to work harder to keep up its normal temperature, which boosts your metabolism. You feel more awake and alert. The shock of cold water also stimulates the nervous system, which makes you feel more alert and focused.

Facing a cold shower every day can be challenging. I am sure you will need to gather your thoughts to handle the distress without feeling uncomfortable. So pull your courage and strength together and take the plunge.

Before going further, it’s important to note that not everyone should take a cold shower. If you have medical conditions such as asthma or cardiovascular health issues, consult your doctor or healthcare professional.

Women who are pregnant, or anyone who has a compromised immune system, it is not advised for you to take cold showers.

Okay, the rest of you who feel up to the challenge, let’s go!

Steps to help you prepare for daily cold showers.

  • Start Gradually: Begin with lukewarm water and gradually decrease the temperature over several days to weeks.
  • Set a Timer: Start with short bursts of cold exposure; start with 30 seconds and work your way up to several minutes.
  • Take Deep Breaths: Focus on your breath to help manage discomfort. Deep, controlled breaths can calm the nervous system.
  • End on a High Note: Finish your shower with a burst of cold water to maintain the benefits.

Try taking cold showers; gradually build up to taking them daily. Patience and practice will lead to possible health benefits.

Until next time,

Peace, Love, and Blessings❤️
