Have you ever slept with earbuds? I must admit I have; people sleep with earbuds for various reasons. For me, it was drifting off to sleep with soothing quiet music. Other reasons may include listening to meditation guides or white noise or trying to enhance sleep quality.
While it seems like a great solution, there are pros and cons to using earbuds while you sleep. I will review those as well as possible alternatives for falling asleep faster, and lower environmental noise.
Choosing to wear earbuds in a noisy environment, such as railroad tracks, busy roads, or noisy neighbors, is essential and provides a buffer against noise.
My reason for wearing earbuds was that I could fall asleep to playlists featuring calming music or natural sounds. The music or sounds helped me to relax and drift off to sleep.
Other people find comfort listening to audiobooks, podcasts, or guided meditation. They find it quiets a restless mind before sleeping.
Another reason may be to achieve privacy. If you have a roommate or partner, you don’t want to disturb them with your meditation practice.
All of the above are great reasons to wear earbuds while sleeping; however, there are downsides.
The reason I stopped wearing earbuds overnight was physical discomfort. I sleep on my side, and having an earbud in all night caused irritation to my ear canal. Other issues could be skin irritation, and pain in the ear and jaw.
Because earbuds can trap moisture and heat in the ear canal, bacteria can grow, leading to an ear infection. Otitis externa, known as swimmer’s ear, is an infection of the outer ear canal. which can develop. A buildup of earwax around the earbud can lead to blockages or other infections.
Inside your ears are fine, delicate hairs that flow back and forth to move sound waves, allowing us to hear. Playing sound at a high volume can lead to persistent tinnitus, ringing in your ears. Or another condition, noise-induced hearing loss.
Allowing you to relax and fall asleep is a positive reason for wearing earbuds. But that doesn’t mean you will stay asleep. Disrupted sleep patterns are common when wearing earbuds to bed.
Other drawbacks include being unable to hear emergency alarms. If your earbuds are wired, you could possibly get entangled in them.
The following are suggested safety tips for wearing earbuds all night to reduce risk.
Look for earbuds that are designed for sleeping; the low-profile design is comfortable for side sleepers. They are wireless and have on/off timers.
Keep your earbuds clean to prevent bacteria buildup and let your ears rest during the day. Using a volume below 60% of maximum protects your hearing.
Sleep headphones are an alternative you may want to consider. They look like a headband, have built-in speakers, and are designed for overnight use.
White noise machines produce sounds to mask disruptive noises. Benefits are nothing inside your ear; they cover the entire room.
Place heavy curtains and rugs to block outside noise. Develop a bedtime routine that helps you relax. One hour before bed, turn off the TV, the radio, and your cell phone. Practice meditation or mindfulness exercises. Read a book or write in your journal.
Use this as your quiet time, no caffeine and no screens before bedtime.
Until next time,
Peace, Love, and Blessings❤️
