Fall Prevention for Our Elders

The leading cause of injuries in adults 65 or older is falls. More than 1 in 4 adults in this age range falls yearly. These falls can result in major injuries such as hip fractures, brain injuries, and, in some cases, death. Ultimately, falls lead to a loss of independence.

Falls, even when they don’t cause an injury, can lead to post-fall syndrome. A severe fear of falling. This leads to reduced daily activity, causing muscles to weaken. That weakness increases the risk of future falls.

Complications and hospitalizations from falls are a leading cause of death in seniors. Prevention is the key. Identifying risks and correcting or managing them maintains safety.

Lower body weakness or lack of strength in the legs reduces balance and reflex times.

Medications like certain sedatives, anti-depressants, and some over-the-counter drugs can cause dizziness that affects balance.

Changes in vision or inner ear conditions, such as vertigo, make it difficult to get around safely.

Low levels of vitamin D affect bone density and muscle health.

A major cause of falls is preventable hazards in the home. Poor lighting, loose rugs, or no grab bars in the bathroom.

Fall prevention is the key to ensuring safety. Let’s review some prevention measures.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist to check if any of your prescribed medications or over-the-counter medications increase your risk of falling.

Have an eye examination yearly to update eyeglass prescriptions and check for conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts.

Strength and balance conditioning programs, such as Tai Chi, improve mobility and reaction time. Most Medicare Advantage plans offer Silver Sneakers, a free gym membership. Gyms offer mobility and strengthening classes.

Be sure to take precautions in your home and address fall hazards. Make sure there are no throw rugs, install handrails on both sides of the stairs, and install grab bars on the inside and outside of your bathtub.

Decrease your fall risks, keep moving and grooving!!!

Until next time,

Peace Love and Blessings ❤️
