Spring has arrived, the time for Spring breaks, graduations, parties, and weddings. During the celebration, alcohol will be flowing. However, you may want to make sure you have some food in your stomach before you drink.
Eating, staying hydrated, and getting some nutrients won’t prevent you from getting intoxicated, but they will slow it down. If your belly is full of food, it slows down the rate at which alcohol gets into your intestines.
Before drinking, an ideal meal should include protein, fat, and complex carbohydrates. Fat slows the emptying the most, protein stabilizes your blood sugar, and carbohydrates give the liver glycogen to work with while it processes alcohol.
Examples of pre-drinking meals include eggs with avocado toast, a burger, salmon with rice, or simply a handful of nuts with cheese. Drinking on an empty stomach is the fastest way to get intoxicated. You should eat one to three hours before drinking to make sure food is still in your stomach.
Eating healthy fats and food high in potassium, like avocados, slows down alcohol absorption. Healthy fats prevent nausea and hangovers. Spread avocado on whole-grain toast or eat it in a salad.
Eggs are high in protein and have cysteine, which supports liver function. Scrambled eggs, an omelet, or hard-boiled eggs keep you feeling full and reduce alcohol cravings.
Salmon is full of omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins. Salmon protects the stomach and supports liver health. Eat it with steamed vegetables or a salad.
Oats and whole grains provide fiber, protein, and minerals, such as magnesium and selenium, which support liver function and stabilize blood sugar. This is full oats, not the five-minute ones. Oatmeal, smoothies, or baked goods are great ways to eat oats.
Greek yogurt combines healthy fats and protein. It is easy on the stomach and contains probiotics to help digestion.
Sweet potatoes are high in complex carbohydrates and potassium. They provide energy and fight dehydration caused by alcohol.
Fruits and berries are rich in vitamin C. They support hydration and reduce the severity of hangovers.
Eating a full meal before drinking is the best thing to do, but if that is not possible, eat one of the foods listed above to slow down intoxication and dehydration.
Take heed, eat at least 1-3 hours before drinking to assure food is in your belly. Slow down the absorption of alcohol to your intestine.
Until next time,
Peace, Love, and Blessings ❤️
